Karamoja Sacred lands Walking safari - Matheniko Bokora Wildlife Reserve Uganda

The Matheniko Wildlife Reserve gives the ultimate bush experience and hosting the sacred grounds of the Karamojong. This is a truly Out of Africa experience with walking safari, bush camps, homestay with nomadic cattle keepers and traditional families, visit to an ancestral rock painting and guided by knowledgeable guides.

Itinerary

Day 1: Moroto town - Start of walking safari

Stop At: Moroto, Moroto, Northern Region
7AM the journey starts with a scenic drive in between the arid hills, acacia trees and shrubs towards the leaser known Matheniko Wildlife Reserve. As the landscape changes, you will notice that the people have also adapted to the dry climate. Here the Karamojong and Turkana (Kenya) tribes are living together with their cattle.

The car will drop us off at the starting point of the Walking safari, a communal grazing area marked by a large granite rock that withholds one of the ancient Nilotic rock paintings in Northeast Uganda.
Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes

Stop At: Matheniko, Uganda
The first day of the Walking safari takes you from the rock painting to the first stop being "Apule" the river where ceremonies were conducted by the first settlers. The river has mythical status because - like Meka for the moslims - the Karimojong elders will face into the direction of the river while gathering and conducting prayers.

The walk continues through the shrubs and acacia trees following migrational routes. The guide will share his traditional knowledge about navigation, cattle keeping, mammals, insects, plants, fruits and their medicinal properties.

The bush camp will be set up at the end of the day on a location perfectly overlooking the sacred hills that are the destination for the second day.
Duration: 5 hours

Stop At: Matheniko, Uganda
After setting camp we will immerse ourselves in the typical Karamojong pastoral life by sharing day and night witnessing cultural practices with the shepherds in their Kraals. You will be able to help bringing the cows to the kraal, milking the cow and experience traditions as spearing a cow for blood to drink and eat roasted. In the morning animals are milked for breakfast and guests help to take the animals for grazing and watering. A truly unique experience for even the Karamojong.
Duration: 3 hours

Meals included:
• Lunch: Packed lunch
• Dinner: Dinner prepared at the bush camp.
Accommodation included: Overnight camping within the Matheniko Wildlife Reserve with a trekkers tent, sleeping mat and sleeping bag included.

Day 2: Walk into the sacred hills

Stop At: Matheniko, Uganda
After a freshly prepared breakfast at sunrise, the second day of the Walking safari will take us to the sacred rock of the Karimojong. The granite bolder where prayers have been conducted for centuries.

The walk continues through different shrub areas and over cattle paths used to connect temporal settlements with watering points and grazing areas.
Duration: 6 hours

Meals included:
• Lunch: Packed lunch prepared in the morning at the campsite.
• Breakfast: Breakfast freshly prepared at the campsite.
• Dinner: Dinner prepared and the campsite.

Day 3: Sacred hills - Cattle dam

Stop At: Matheniko, Uganda
The last day of the walking safari leads us to the final destination in the heart of the Matheniko Wildlife Reserve where a permanent dam is located and many nomadic shepherds have settled.
