Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport

Stop At: Moshi, Moshi, Kilimanjaro Region
If you arrive early and are feeling adventurous, walk into town and explore Moshi's bustling markets.
Duration: 1 day

Day 2: Visit the incredible East Meru Community School

Stop At: Moshi, Moshi, Kilimanjaro Region
Adventure Out Loud donate 50% of our profits to keep disadvantaged students in school and today you'll get a chance to meet some of the students we are sponsoring through school when we visit East Meru Community School. This will be a very immersive day that gives you a chance to connect with the difference you are making simply by travelling with a responsible tourism operator.

Day 3: Kilimanjaro Prep Day

Stop At: Moshi, Moshi, Kilimanjaro Region
Today you will meet your guiding team who will give you a full trek briefing, check you gear and take you to a hire shop if you are missing anything. Hiring gear is easy and cheap but for comfort purposes there are a few essentials you should bring with you. These are clearly outlined in the comprehensive packing list and video that we will send to you.

For those of you who want to learn a little Swahili, we call our trekking crew Wagumu (Wa-gu-mu). This roughly translates to strong mountain men.

Day 4: Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Stop At: Mount Kilimanjaro, Kilimanjaro National Park 00255 Tanzania
Summary:
- Machame Gate to Machame Camp
- Elevation: 1,800m to 3,000m
- Distance: 11 km
- Hiking Time: 5 - 7 hours
- Habitat: Rain forest

The drive from Moshi to Machame Gate takes about 90 minutes. The journey passes through the village of Machame which is located on the lower slopes of the mountain. After registering at the gate, we walk through the rain forest on a winding trail up a ridge. This trail can be muddy and slippery and it frequently rains on today. It is recommended that you bring or hire good wet weather gear.

Day 5: Machame Camp to Shira Camp

Stop At: Mount Kilimanjaro, Kilimanjaro National Park 00255 Tanzania

- Elevation: 3,000m to 3,800m
- Distance: 5 km
- Hiking Time: 4 - 6 hours
- Habitat: Heather & Moorland

After breakfast, we leave the rain forest and continue our ascent along a steep and rocky ridge. The climb is more challenging than day 1 and the majority of the morning will be spent walking through an eerie mist. Once the mist lifts, the 365 degree views are spectacular until you reach Shira Camp where you can look up to Uhuru Peak as Kibo towers above you.

Day 6: Shira Camp to Barranco Camp

Stop At: Mount Kilimanjaro, Kilimanjaro National Park 00255 Tanzania
Summary:
- Shira Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower
- Elevation: 3,800m to 3,900m via 4,700m
- Distance: 10 km
- Hiking Time: 6 - 8 hours
- Habitat: Semi desert

From the Shira Plateau, we continue our trek up a ridge towards Kibo. The walk is a gradual incline that eventually leads us to lunch at Lava Tower (4,700m). This is a challenging walk and it is not uncommon to feel slight discomfort and the beginning effects of Acute Mountain Sickness (mild altitude sickness).

After lunch we descend quickly through some of the most stunning scenery you will ever see to reach Barranco Camp (3,900m). While you end the day at the same elevation as you started, this day is very important for acclimatisation and will help your body prepare for summit day.

Day 7: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

- Elevation: 3,900m to 4,000m
- Distance: 5 km
- Hiking Time: 4 - 5 hours
- Habitat: Alpine desert

After breakfast, we leave Barranco Camp to tackle one of the most exciting parts of our trek, Barranco Wall. Despite the well trod path, ascending this 200 - 300m high wall is extremely challenging. Lucky, you’re joined by an experienced team of guides and porters who will sing, dance and support you all the way to the top.

Safely on top of Barranco Wall, you’ll enjoy breath-taking 360 degree views of never-ending valleys, far-away savannas and millions of fluffy white clouds billowing below. Except for one shorter ascent that leads in to camp, the rest of the day is very easy.

Day 8: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

- Elevation: 4,000m to 4,600m
- Distance: 4 km
- Hiking Time: 4 - 5 hours
- Habitat: Alpine desert

After breakfast, we leave Karanga Camp on a steady ascending route to Barafu Camp. This trek offers views of both the Kibo and Mwenzi peaks along with the summit glaciers from a number of different angles. This is an easy and short trek designed to ensure you are well acclimatised and rested before you tackle Uhuru Peak tonight. Arriving at lunch time, you’ll eat before resting in the afternoon and evening.

Day 9: SUMMIT

Stop At: Mount Kilimanjaro, Kilimanjaro National Park 00255 Tanzania
Summary:
- Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak (return) and down to High Camp
- Elevation: 4,600m to 5,895m and down to 3,800m
- Distance: 5 km summit ascent | 5 km summit descent | 3km descent
- Hiking Time: 6 - 8 hours summit ascent | 2 - 4 hours summit descent | 2 - 3 hour descent
- Habitat: Arctic zone to alpine desert

Starting our trek at midnight, we zig zag our way up Kibo peak, between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers and up towards Stella Point (5,685m). Tonight is extremely cold and the trek to Stella Point can feel like it will never end but as the sun begins to rise, your body will start to thaw and you’ll begin to appreciate how far you have come.
Sunrise and a hot ginger tea at Stella Point will breath new energy into your tired body and after a short break we'll follow the crater rim for another hour to Kilimanjaro’s highest point, Uhuru Peak. Standing on the “Roof of Africa”, you’ll undoubtedly feel emotional and proud of what will easily be a huge achievement in your life.
After a short photo opportunity, we begin our descent back to Barafu Camp where you will have a rest and lunch. After lunch, we must continue our descent to High (Millenial) Camp - altitude 3,800m. This is an easy, down hill stroll and although you will be tired, most people enjoy this part of the trek.

Day 10: Kilimanjaro: Get me off this mountain!!!

- High Camp to Moshi
- Elevation (ft): 3,800m to 1,800m
- Distance: 14 km
- Hiking Time: 3 - 5 hours
- Habitat: Rain forest

After breakfast, we continue our descent though the heather and moorland and into the rain forest. There is a chance of rain today but you won’t care, the thought of your first hot shower and real bed in a week will make the day go incredibly quickly. Reaching Mweka gate, you’ll celebrate your incredible achievement with a delicious lunch and a cold beverage. After lunch we say goodbye to our wagumu (porters and guides) and head for the comfort of our hotel.

Day 11: Make your own adventure

Stop At: Moshi, Moshi, Kilimanjaro Region
Spend your final day relaxing by the pool, packing, exploring the bustling Moshi, enjoying a coffee at Union Cafe or braving a gentle massage before we celebrate new friends and a life-long memories at our celebration dinner.

Day 12: End of tour

Stop At: Moshi, Moshi, Kilimanjaro Region
Today you head home with memories to last a life-time from what has been an unforgettable adventure. Airport transfers included.
