Kilimanjaro Climbing - 6 Days Rongai Route ---

Climb Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa, is unforgettable event in life time. The mountain is among major climbing destination in the world, and has been subjected for many scientific studies due to its shrinking and disappearing ice fields. Climbing Kilimanjaro could be done through official established different routes such as, Marangu, Machame, Lemosho, Shira, Umbwe, Londrosi and Rongai.

The Rongai route is the only route that approaches Kilimanjaro from the north, close to the Kenyan border. Though gaining popularity amongst climbers, this route still experiences low crowds.. It is the preferred route for those looking for an alternative to the popular Marangu route, for who would like a more remote hike.

Itinerary

Day 1: Nale Muru gate - First Cave (2,670m)

Stop At: Mount Kilimanjaro, Kilimanjaro National Park 00255 Tanzania
After signing in and preparing the porters, you will begin the hike on a wide path that winds through fields of maize and potatoes before entering pine forest. The track then starts to climb consistently, but gently through attractive forest that shelters a variety of wildlife. The forest begins to thin out and the first camp is at the edge of the moorland zone with extensive views over the Kenyan plains. On that day the walk of about 3-4 hours ends at Simba Camp (First Cave) 2,670m from sea level.

Accommodation included: This is the Basic Camping accommodation trip, where setting the tents in the ground as hiking from point to point.

Day 2: First Cave - Second Cave (3,450m)

Stop At: Mount Kilimanjaro, Kilimanjaro National Park 00255 Tanzania
The morning walk of about 3-4 hours is a steady ascend up the Second Cave 3,450m with superb views of Kibo and the Eastern ice fields on the Crater rim.

Day 3: Second Cave - Third Cave (3,870m)

Stop At: Mount Kilimanjaro, Kilimanjaro National Park 00255 Tanzania
That is the other day with 4-5 hours walk to Third Cave 3,870m.

Day 4: Third Cave - Kibo Camp (4,700m)

Stop At: Mount Kilimanjaro, Kilimanjaro National Park 00255 Tanzania
Hike for 5 hours to Kibo campsite at the bottom of the Kibo Crater wall. The rest hours of the day is spent resting in preparation for the final ascending before a very early night!

Day 5: Kibo Camp - Uhuru Peak/Summit (5,895m) - Horomb Camp (3,720m)

Stop At: Mount Kilimanjaro, Kilimanjaro National Park 00255 Tanzania
To Sumit (Uhuru Peak) 5,895m with approximately 11-12 hours walk and then descend to Horombo Hut down to 3,720m. Begin final and by far the steepest and most depending part of the climb by torchlight around 1.00am. Proceeds slowly in the darkness on a switchback trail through loose volcanic scree to reach the crater rim at Gillman’s Point (5,685m). Rest there for a short time to enjoy the spectacular glaciers and ice cliffs that still occupy most of the summit area. The descend to Kibo is surprisingly fast and after some refreshments, continue the descend to reach the final campsite of Horombo 3,720m after 3-4 hours walk.

Day 6: Horombo Camp - Mandara Camp - Marangu Gate

Stop At: Mount Kilimanjaro, Kilimanjaro National Park 00255 Tanzania
After breakfast at Horombo Hut, steady descend takes us down through moorland to Mandara Hut (2,700m), the first stopping place at the Marangu Route. Continue descending through lovely lush forest on a good path to the National Park gate at Marangu. At lowest elevations, it can be wet and muddy. Gaiters and trekking poles will help. Shorts and t-shirts will probably be plenty to wear (keep rain gear and warmer clothing handy). A vehicle will meet you at Marangu village to drive you back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.
