Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is famous as a former capital of the Zanzibar Sultanate, and flourishing centre of the spice trade as well as the slave trade in the 19th century. Today there are over 16,000 people in the town, and over 1,700 recorded buildings. Tall houses line narrow alleyways set in a confusing maze radiating out from the centre towards the sea.

The town is most often cacophonous; street-crossing is a gamble (to work out what is street and what is not is all part of the fun); the buildings are historic, architecturally beautiful and falling apart; electric and laundry cables are strung and hang chaotically between and around the structures and narrow streets; but above all else the town and its people are astoundingly welcoming and friendly. The tour includes a visit to an Anglican Cathedral of Christ (Slave market chambers), House of Wonders, the Palace Museum (People's Palace), Darajani Market, St Joseph’s Catholic Cathedral, Dr Livingston's House and the Old Fort amongst others. It is a fascinating look at the essence of Zanzibar.

You will see Zanzibar's bustling market, winding alleyways, ornately carved and studded doors, two cathedrals and countless mosques. Stone Town has some excellent gift shops with plenty of souvenirs and handicrafts to choose from.
