Stop At: Mahamevnawa Dhammachethiya Buddhist Monastery Anuradhapura, Watawandana Rd, Anuradhapura 50000 Sri Lanka

Once the first capital of Sri Lanka, Anuradhapura is today a UNESCO World Heritage Site that still conveys an aura of royalty. Many historical events occurred in that territory. You will visit the Bodhi Temple (Sri Maha Bodhiya), Sri Lanka's second most sacred place, after the Temple of the Tooth Relic in Kandy. The Bodhi Tree is a branch that comes from the original tree (Ficus religiosa) under which the Buddha attained enlightenment. Finally it is also the oldest tree in the world and historically proven.

Stop At: Dambulla Cave Temple, Jaffna Hwy, Habarana 50150 Sri Lanka

Within the cultural triangle is Dambulla, a city rich in history that dates back to the first century before Christ. It is said that King Valagamba, underwent an exile of 14 years, and during his reign Anuradhapura, took refuge in the caverns of the city. In that place a magnificent temple in the rock was then built as a sign of gratitude to the monks who offered shelter and protection. The city is therefore proud to host the largest and best preserved Sri Lankan temple complex. There are more than 80 caverns nearby. The main attractions are however limited to five caves that contain beautiful statues and frescoes related to the life of the Buddha.

Speaking of fortified cities, none exceeds in magnificence Galle, with its Dutch fort. The city has the distinction of having a fort right on the ocean and is also the best preserved in Southeast Asia. Named World Heritage Site, it represents the essence of the old world charm, when the main streets were bordered by Dutch colonial villas. The most fascinating building in the area is the church building of the Dutch Reformed Church, which includes other sculptured and richly decorated monuments for the delight of Dutch settlers. If you want to be part of this beautiful place, be in tune with its colonial setting, the fort houses some fantastic, boutique-style accommodations in restored ancient villas that evoke past colonial glory.

Stop At: Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, Sri Dalada Veediya, Kandy 20000 Sri Lanka

Kandy is a serene city with wonderful views, great archaeological value and an extraordinary climate. Before the British colonized the entire island, Kandy had been the last capital under the reign of King Sri Vikrama Rajasinha. Many of the architectures are still well preserved and the city is home to the respected Buddha Tooth Relic Temple. Even today crowds of people visit the Temple which has been restored and preserved over the years. However, the most exciting visit of the city is always during the Esala Perahera, the spectacular folk show.

Stop At: Polonnaruwa Sri Lanka

About 800 or more years ago, Polonnaruwa was a thriving commercial city and religious center of Sri Lanka, when the Chola dynasty of South India conquered the northern part of the island by choosing Polonnaruwa as its capital. Because of what we see today in the city the fusion of the two cultures, Buddhism and Hinduism, both in archeology and in architecture. The splendors of both cultures give an idea of how it appeared in its golden age. Only the Sacred Square is worth the visit.

Stop At: Sigiriya The Ancient Rock Fortress, Sigiriya 21120 Sri Lanka

According to legend, the creative mind behind the Palace of Pleasure and Fortress of the archaeological site of Sigiriya which was a usurper. In fact, King Kasyapa walled his own father alive and deprived the legitimate heir and prince Moggalana of the throne. You can not hide the fact that it was brilliant in designing not only the architecture of the whole kingdom, but also the complex irrigation system. Even today, archaeologists are amazed by the beauty of the remains of the main palace. In addition to the main building, the elaborate frescoes and mirrored walls should not be lost, which are said to have been polished with great effort. In the stone walls, therefore, it is reflected in a mirror. Named to be the eighth wonder of the world, Sigiriya should be an important stop for your explorations in Sri Lanka.

Did someone say beach party? No place throws a party like Hikkaduwa, which is dearly known as Hikka. Famous for partying and inspiration for the brand, the city is a haven for surfers, scuba divers and snorkelers. The key attraction would be the beautiful coral reef and the marine life that surrounds it. You can observe both of these enchanting organisms either scuba diving or on glass boats while the sea breeze chill you traveling the journey.
