The walls are the image that is unmistakably associated with the town of Ávila and they were the main reason, together with the Romanesque churches, why the UNESCO included the town on its list of World Heritage Sites in 1985.

Ávila Cathedral stands as both church and fortress and its apse, known locally as the cimorro and set in the walls, is the most imposing turret of the east wall.

Stop At: Basilica de San Vicente, Plaza de San Vicente, Avila Spain

Outside the walls, the Basilica of San Vicente was built in Caleno granite in a way that was greatly conditioned by the lie of the land and in the place where tradition situates the martyrdom and burial of Vincent, Sabina and Cristeta. It is the prime model of the Romanesque style in Ávila and its measured proportions make it a unique example of the Hispanic Romanesque style. With its outside influences and the influence of the cathedral construction, it is also the propagator of the style in the town.

Stop At: Convento de Santa Teresa, Plaza de la Santa, Avila Spain

The church was built on the house in which Teresa de Cepeda y Ahumada was born and is part of the Carmelite convent. Underground, the large vaulted burial crypt, which is currently used as the Museum of St Teresa, is the only example of its kind in Spanish religious architecture. The work was directed by the Carmelite architect Fray Alonso de San José and began in 1629. The building was opened on 15 October 1636.

The Aqueduct of Segovia was built during the second half of the 1st century A.D. under the rule of the Roman Empire and supplied water from the Frío River to the city into the 20th century. The remaining portion of the structure stands 28.5 meters tall at its maximum height and nearly 6 additional meters deep in the main section.

Built between the 16th and 18th centuries, the Santa Iglesia Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción y de San Frutos, (literally “The Holy Cathedral of Our Lady of the Holy Assumption and Saint Frutos”), is late Gothic in style. It is one of the last Gothic cathedrals to be built in Europe. Its construction spanned the entire 16th century, from 1525 to 1768 to be precise. In this period, architecture in Europe was largely Renaissance in style, which is why while Segovia Cathedral was built in a predominantly Late Gothic style, it also displays some Renaissance elements.
