Discover Senegal and Ghana, 11 Days

Embark on a fascinating adventure into the West Coast visiting Senegal & Ghana. Not only will you take in the vibrant atmosphere of all two countries capital cities but you will also see the natural wonders of the rare phenomenon known as Pink Lake in Senegal and enjoy the intriguing history of Senegal as you visit the UNESCO World Heritage site of Goree Island.

From the fantasy coffin shops of Teshie to the ornamental bead makers of Krobo Odumase to the bold patterns of the beautifully crafted Kente cloth in Bonwire to the intricate designs of Ntonso Adinkra cloth of the Ashanti people, see the best of Ghana’s craftsmen and artisans.

Walk through ancient monuments as you check into the iconic heritage Castles of Elmina and Cape Coast; a journey into the heart of slave history of the country. Climax your experience with the incredible views of one of the surviving tropical Rain forests of West Africa on a visit to the Kakum National park.

Itinerary

Day 1: ARRIVE IN DAKAR, SENEGAL

Pass By: Blaise Diagne International Airport, Ndiass, Senegal
Meet at the arrival hall with a traveler name on signage.

Day 2: DAKAR

Stop At: Le Monument de la Renaissance Africaine, Ouakam, Dakar Senegal
After breakfast begin the city tour of Dakar and vicinity. Sites include: the Africa Renaissance Monument: a 164 Feet high monument unveiled in 2010, overlooking Dakar and is taller than the Statue of Liberty. The once controversial bronze statue is a popular attraction among locals as well as visitors. It features a man, woman and child pointing, a symbol of renewed African hope. The woman is now decently clothed, as conservative groups forced the government to lengthen her formerly short skirt, at a cost of more than US$ 10 million, to more modest length.
Independence Place, the heart of the city, you will pass by presidential palace and the main cathedral. Wander at the beach to see people doing different sport including wrestling.

Day 3: GOREE ISLAND

Stop At: Island of Goree, Dakar Senegal
Depart on the 20 minutes ferry ride to visit the charming yet infamous Goree Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore the usually quiet Streets lined with mostly pastel colored colonial era buildings. Among the most famous buildings here is the House of Slaves which records the painful history of Goree’s past.
Observe the “Door of No Return” through which millions of Africans passed on the way to slavery in the Americas. The tour includes a visit to the ethnographic museum and a lecture by the curator on the history of Goree.
You may visit the MariamaBâ, Elite high school for girls named after the famous Senegalese writer. This High School was founded in1977 by Leopold Sedar Senghor, first president of Senegal, and was named after MariamaBâ, novelist, teacher, and feminist who struggled for women’s rights in Senegal. The school admits girls who obtained the highest scores during the national secondary school entrance exam. Each year, about 50 female students from the 11 regions of Senegal are given the opportunity to attend the school for the rest of their high school years.
Late afternoon return to Dakar and visit the handicraft village, the Ifan Museum and return to the hotel.

Day 4: PINK LAKE

Stop At: Bc92 Cité Akys Bambilor, 14.800183296203613, -17.190811157226563, Senegal
After breakfast travel to visit Pink Lake, a rare natural phenomenon caused by a unique combination of micro-organism and high concentration of salts which gives the lake its unique pink color. Interact with the women harvesting salt and visit the nearby Fulani village and Bambilore named tortoises’ village. Afternoon drive to visit the fisher village of Kayar and return to Dakar.

Day 5: ARRIVE IN ACCRA, GHANA

Pass By: Kotoka International Airport, Airport Rd, Accra, Ghana
Morning at leisure before departure flight to Ghana. On arrival in Accra you will be met, assisted and transferred to your hotel for the next three nights

Day 6: ACCRA

Stop At: W.E.B. DuBois Center, 1 Circular Road, Cantonments just few meters from the US Embassy and close to Ghana International School, Accra Ghana
Experience the bustling city of Accra today which is a blend of modern building and old structures that exited during the colonial times. This 120-year-old city has a number of historical things to offer as you set off after a sumptuous breakfast at your hotel, passing through the economic and administrative districts.
The first visit will be to W.E.B Du Bois Centre honoring the life of the prominent Pan-Africanist who chose to live and work in Ghana.
We continue to Independence Square where you will see the enclosed flame of African Liberation, which was lit by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah in 1961. The Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, final resting place of Ghana’s first president. Set in attractive gardens, there is an adjoining museum, which contains photos, artifacts and an insight into Dr. Nkrumah’s life. Adjoining the park is the National Cultural Centre, which is Ghana’s largest outdoor arts and crafts market selling traditional crafts from all over West Africa.
Our day’s visit ends at Jamestown Community-One of Accra’s most historic neighborhoods where history resides on every corner. Best known for its lighthouses (the first of which was constructed in 1875) as a navigational aid for trading vessels sailing through the Gulf of Guinea. The original structure was ruined but a larger and more improved lighthouse completed in 1921 is still functioning today.
You may visit “Brazil House” and learn about the seven Afro-Brazilian families who returned to settle in Ghana in 1836. Familiar Brazilian/Portuguese last names such as De Souza, Palmares, Azumah, Amorin, Da Costa, Santos, De Medeiros and Olympio are abundant in this section of Accra

Day 7: ACCRA / ANOMABO/ ELMINA

Stop At: Fort William, Anomabo Ghana
After breakfast, we will check out of our hotel and head down the coast to Ghana’s slave routes. to Akosombo. Enroute we will visit the TK beads, experts in making beautiful traditional beads using ancient methods. Your guide will talk you through the skilled process of making the beads. Beads are culturally a symbol of wealth and beauty here in Ghana and are still used during traditional durbars and festivals. After the demonstration we can admire and purchase a wide selection of beads that have been made here in the onsite shop.
We will also visit Fort William in Anomabo one of the historic towns in Ghana so far as slave trade is concerned. Anomabo played a vital role in the exportation of slaves from the then Gold Coast. Sitting in the heart of the town is Fort William, also called Anomabo Castle. This Fort was formally called Fort Charles was demolished and rebuilt where the old one once stood. It was christened Fort William by 19th Century commander Brodie Cruikshank in honor of King William IV.
Once a rest house and a post office, then a state prison (till 2001), Fort William now serves Anomabo as a community Library.
Anomabo also has a number of Posuban (the shrines of the city’s Asafo companies, ancient fraternities meant to defend the city). There is Posuban number 6, in the shape of a shop which is the largest. We shall walk west from Fort William for about 50m towards the yellow house to find this shrine. We shall also see Posuban No. 7 as well as Posuban No. 3 before leaving for Elmina.
Continue to Elmina arriving early evening.

Day 8: ELMINA & CAPE COAST CASTLES

Stop At: Cape Coast Castle, Cape Coast Ghana
Today we will visit Cape Coast castle, a UNESCO world heritage site. The castle is a thought-provoking monument to a harrowing period in the region’s history. You will take an emotional journey through the castle which held more enslaved Africans than any other in the region, viewing the dungeons and the infamous “Door of no return”. There is a significant historical museum inside, which explains the history of the castle and of Cape Coast itself. You can purchase literature on Ghana’s forts and castles, as well as the cultural history and traditions of Ghana.
Late afternoon (after lunch), you will go through the “Fihankra” Fihankra is a ceremony which seeks to reconnect people of African descent, who have been lost due to the transatlantic slave trade, to the motherland. This ceremony reconnects returnees with the cultural and spiritual ties that had been denied them for centuries. The final part of Fihankra includes a naming ceremony.
Next, we visit Elmina Castle another World Heritage site. This evening, enjoy the sights of the many colorful fishing boats bringing their daily catch into the harbor and take the opportunity to mix with the locals at the nearby market. A short distance from the market we visit the boat builders, still building colorful fishing boats using traditional tools and methods spanning centuries

Day 9: ELMINA - KAKUM NATIONAL PARK- ACCRA-DEPART

Stop At: Kakum National Park, Cape Coast Ghana
After breakfast, you will check out of your hotel for a visit to the Kakum National Park, Ghana’s most famous parks. Take a brief walking tour on the forest floor where you will learn how our ancestors lived in the forest. See birds, butterflies and perhaps catch a glimpse of the forests over 40 species of mammals including monkeys and the reclusive forest elephant. Proceed to the canopy walk. Kakum is home to Africa’s only aerial walkway through the tree canopy, 1000-foot-long and even-bridge walkway with viewing platforms that reach heights over 150 feet above the ground.
On the way, we will stop at Assin Manso, the burial site of two former slaves from the U.S and Jamaica whose remains were re-interred here. Visit the “Slave River” where captured Africans were washed before being confined in the Slave Castles to await shipment to the Americas and Caribbean.
Arrive in Accra late afternoon in time to visit the popular Arts & Crafts Market if you like aggressive bartering or the African Market in Osu (Ghana’s Soho) if you prefer fixed prices.
Transfer to the airport for your onward flight home.
