Stop At: Batalha Monastery, Largo Infante Dom Henrique 2440, Batalha 2440-484 Portugal

In 1385 King John I promised that if his army, in smaller numbers, defeated the Castilians in the important battle of Aljubarrota, he would build a magnificent monastery dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The king was victorious, resulting in the independence of Portugal.

The monument is a masterpiece of Portuguese Gothic architecture, combining Gothic and Manueline styles. Right in the center of the chapel is the huge tomb of Dom Joao I and his wife, Queen Filipa de Lencastre.

Stop At: Basilica of the Holy Trinity, Av. de Dom Jose Alves Correia da Silva, Fatima 2496-908 Portugal

This small agricultural town owes its fame to three little shepherds who in 1917 saw the Virgin Mary in the fields of Cova da Iria. Today, the site is marked by the Basilica of Fatima, where the pilgrims pay homage to the Virgin and her young visionaries. On the hundredth anniversary of the event, Pope Francisco canonized two of the children who died during the Spanish flu pandemic. Visiting the Shrine is an interesting experience, even for non-believers.
