Levada do Norte

The Levada do Norte is one of the longest and oldest levadas on Madeira Island. Built Many centuries ago, its main purpose was to carry the water from the North side of Madeira, which was more humid and rainy, to the South side, in order to irrigate the main agricultural lands.

This Levada is perfect for those who wish to do a relaxing and  easy walk on their visit to Madeira Island.

For approximately two hours you can enjoy fantastic views of the Atlantic Ocean, the Campanário and Ribeira Brava, and the views over the valley of Ribeira Brava, at the end of the walk, are breathtaking.Along the walk you can see the famous “Poios Madeirenses”, organized and maintained agricultural lands, where every centimeter is used to plant products that will be grown for the “self-consumption”, as is the case of vegetables, tubers and fruit trees, which due to the mild and tropical climate of Madeira, grow almost all the year.

It is also possible to observe some endemic species of Madeira, almost over a small "spot" of laurels that grow on this site since many years ago.
