Pass By: Colares, Colares, Sintra Municipality, Lisbon District, Central Portugal

Colares is a small Portuguese wine region in the municipality of Sintra, around the village of Colares, between the mountains and the Atlantic. The region is classified as DOC, Controlled Denomination of Origin and extends along the coast, with vineyards protected by sand dunes. The region is known for its full-bodied, dense red wines and rich tannins.
The vines are grown directly on the sand of Colares DOC, which covers 50 acres of remaining vineyards. In the 1940s, vineyards covered 2,500 acres. Between 1934 and 1994, only the local cooperative could use the name Colares.
As phylloxera cannot live in the sand, the Colares vineyards are some of the only European vines that are not grafted on the American rootstock.go, with the vineyards protected by sand dunes. The region is known for its full-bodied, dense red wines and rich tannins.
