Stop At: Mosteiro dos Jeronimos, Praca do Imperio Belém, Lisbon 1400-206 Portugal

In the place where today the Jerónimos Monastery is located, next to the old beach of Belém, was located originally a small hermitage dedicated to Santa Maria that had been ordered to build by the Infante D. Henrique, in 1452. At the beginning of century XVI the king D Manuel I was recognized by the Holy See as claiming to have a great monastery erected there, which was donated to the Order of the Friars of St. Jerome. A culmination of the Manueline architecture and intrinsically linked to the epic of the Discoveries, this monastery is the most remarkable Portuguese monastic ensemble of its time and one of the main European churches.

The construction began in 1501, it lasted for a hundred years and was directed by a remarkable group of architects and masters of national and foreign works.

Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: Padrao dos Descobrimentos Avenida Brasilia Belem, Lisbon 1400-038 Portugal

The riverside area of Belém is marked by the imposing Padrão dos Descobrimentos. It was conceived in 1940 on the occasion of the "Portuguese World Exhibition", promoted by the government of Salazar to celebrate the double centenary of the foundation and restoration of nationality (1140 and 1640). However, it was only built in 1960, on the occasion of the Commemorations of the 500th anniversary of the Death of Henry the Navigator. Authored by the architect Cottinelli Telmo, he counted on the work of the sculptor Leopoldo de Almeida for its realization.

With 52 meters of height, the monument symbolizes a caravel, led by the figure of the Infante D. Henrique, followed in courting by 32 historical personalities that contributed to the Age of the Discoveries, as for example the king D. Afonso V (1432-81) , the founder of the first discoveries, Vasco da Gama (1460-1524), who discovered the sea route to India, Pedro Álvares Cabral (1467-1520), discoverer of Brazil and Fernão de Magalhães, who crossed the Atlantic in 1520-21, between others.

The façade facing land is shaped like a cross decorated with the Sword of the Order of Aviz, great financier of the trips.

Stop At: Torre de Belem, Avenida Brasilia - Belem, Lisbon 1400-038 Portugal

The harmony and delicate ornaments of the Tower of Belem suggest, in the eyes of those who see it, a worked jewel. However, the vision of the contemporaries of its construction was different: a formidable and fearsome bastion of defense of the entrance of the river, crossing fire with the tower border of San Sebastián, in the other margin. Commissioned by D. Manuel I (1495-1521), it was built by Francisco de Arruda, between 1514 and 1521, on a basalt islet that was located near the right bank of the Tagus, in front of Restelo beach. However, with the progressive displacement of the course of the river over the years, the Tower ended up being practically "tied" to the margin.

Duration: 10 minutes

Pass By: 25 de Abril Bridge, Praca 25 de Abril Almada, Lisbon 1950-358 Portugal

The 25 de Abril Bridge is a suspension bridge over the river Tagus that connects the city of Lisbon (north bank) to the city of Almada (south bank), in Portugal. The bridge crosses the Tagus estuary in the final and narrowest part - the Tagus bottleneck.

The Bridge is 2 277 meters long. With a free span of 1,013 meters, the 25 de Abril Bridge is the 33rd largest suspension bridge in the world. The upper tray houses 6 roadways (3 per direction), while the lower tray houses two railway lines electrified at 25 kv AC.

Projects for the construction of a bridge over the Tagus estuary exist since the end of the 19th century; however, it was not until the 1950s that the Portuguese government moved forward with the construction of a bridge to link the two shores of the Lisbon metropolitan area. Construction began in November 1962 and lasted for four years. The Bridge was inaugurated on August 6, 1966, then only with a road board.
