5Day Salkantay EcoDome Trek to Machu Picchu

Embark on a challenging 5-day trek along the alternative Salkantay route, with stunning views of the Salkantay and Humantay peaks standing over 6,000 meters high. Trek through high jungle and even visit thermal hot springs. Hike along this unspoiled trail, with views of pristine snow-covered peaks and a tranquil lagoon. Visit the wonder of Machu Picchu before returning to Cuzco.

Itinerary

Day 1: Cuzco to Challacancha Transfer - Start Trek

Stop At: Mollepata, 03670, Peru
You will be transferred at 5am from your Cuzco accommodation to Mollepata, a village located 2.30 hrs from Cuzco, for a quick breakfast stop. After one more hour's worth of driving you will reach Challacancha, the starting point of the trek. Hike for three hours before reaching Soraypampa (3,900m) where you will stop and enjoy lunch at the Ecocamp. After lunch, climb to the beautiful Humantay Lagoon for amazing views of the lagoon (4,200m) and of the snow-covered Humantay(5,900m). Afterwards, return to the Ecocamp for dinner and an overnight in the domes.

Day 2: Trek to Salkantay Peaks

Stop At: Salkantay Trail, Peru
Wake up at 5am to prepare your luggage and eat a hearty breakfast before the start of the 6:30am hike this morning. After about 40 minutes of trekking uphill, stunning views of the majestic snow-covered Apu Salkantay, the 2nd-highest peak in Cuzco (6,267m), come into view. After appreciating the imposing peak, continue on for another 40 minutes until reaching Salkantay Pampa (4,150m) where we will stop for a small break. Next, we will continue our hike towards 7Vueltas and the pass of Salkantay where the air is thin and it becomes more difficult to breathe until we reach Paso Apu Salkantay (4,650mm), the highest part of the trek. Take a quick rest and enjoy the impressive views before beginning the decent to Huayrac Machac or Huayrac Pampa (4,000m) where we will enjoy a delicious lunch and after a small break we will continue our trek for about 3.30 hours until we reach Challhuay (3,000m) where we will eat dinner and spend the night in the domes.

Day 3: Trek to Playa Sahuaco - Visit Cocalmayo Thermal Waters

Stop At: Banos Termales de Cocalmayo, 4 Km from Santa Teresa, Santa Teresa Peru
Have breakfast at the Ecocamp before trekking through the high jungle for about 4 hours before reaching Winaypocco (2,600m) where we will stop for lunch. Prepare for a very hot and humid trek with many pesky mosquitos due to the high jungle environment. However, it will be beautiful nonetheless with views of many coffee plantations and a variety of tropical plants. After lunch, continue trekking for about 2 hours more along the Santa Teresa River towards the town of Playa Sahuaco (2,200m) where we will then take local transport to Santa Teresa. Upon arrival at Santa Teresa, you will have the option to visit the thermal waters of Cocalmayo. Overnight in a Santa Teresa hostel.

Day 4: Trek to Hidroeléctrica

Stop At: Hot Springs (Aguas Calientes), Signposted from main square, Aguas Calientes, Machu Picchu Peru
This morning enjoy breakfast at a local restaurant and then begin the trek to Hidroeléctrica. Arrive to Hidroeléctrica by car and then walk about 30 minutes to our lunch destination. After our lunch break, we will continue our trek to Aguas Calientes (2,100m) where we will have dinner and stay the night in a 3-star hotel.

Day 5: Machu Picchu Visit - Return to Cuzco

Stop At: Machu Picchu, 08680, Peru
Get an early start at 04:00 this morning and board the bus for Machu Picchu at 05:30 for a 06:00 arrival to explore the Inca ruins in the early morning light.After exploring this cultural and archaeological marvel, take the bus back to Aguas Calientes for lunch before boarding the train to Ollantaytambo. From here, we will return to Cuzco by bus and your exciting adventure through the Andes ends with a Cuzco City drop-off.
