Essaouira is not world-famous for its monuments nor for its surprising museums, it's rather a voyage to another world which impacts travellers. Marvel at the day to day of its inhabitants, stores and winding streets. Nevertheless, there are several attractions which cannot be missed.

Wandering around the old city in the bright afternoon sun, the colours are dazzling. Glowing orange city walls, white-washed dwellings and the distinctive blue of doors, djellabas and boats. Strolling these alleyways is relaxing in a way that Marrakech could never be. In Essaouira there is no hassle, no fear of getting run over by carts or bikes in the souks, and everyone seems genuinely happy to meet you.

Essaouira’s wide, sandy beach is a great place for walking, but swimming and sunbathing can be difficult when the winds are strong. If you do swim, stick to the town stretch as the north beach (aka Plage de Safi) has dangerous currents.

Essaouira's large working port is noisy, pungent and hugely atmospheric. Along with the flurry of boats arriving and departing, nets being repaired and the day’s catch being landed, you can see traditional wooden boats being made. The boatbuilders supply fishing vessels for the entire Moroccan coast and even as far away as France, as the design is particularly seaworthy. It’s also worth visiting the fish auction, which takes place in the market hall just outside the port gates.
