Imperial Roman Town Planning

This visit captures how advanced Imperial Rome was: from aqueducts bringing in fresh water to one million inhabitants, to public baths (which were really proto-YMCAs!), to the use of concrete in architecture and engineering... At the end of the tour, you'll realize that Imperial Rome invented and pioneered lots of technology that we consider "modern."

Duration: 15 minutes

Stop At: Vicus Caprarius – the City of Water, Vicolo del Puttarello 25, 00187 Rome Italy

The site Vicus Caprarius (in Latin) a.k.a. La Citta’ dell’Acqua (in Italian) was excavated recently. It uncovered some of the oldest apartment building in Rome (dating to circa 65 A.D.) and it contains a hydraulic cement-lined water tank from the Emperor Hadrian's era that helped supply this part of the bustling Imperial metropolis with drinking water. What a great way to explore Imperial Rome’s modern town planning!
