There are several instruments mixed and they provide the mood for the scene. Next you hear lead singer use variances of pitch and intonations. Finally, the striking colors painted on the actors' faces and ornate headpieces provide visual aesthetics. These three components together make up Kathakali dance.

Kathakali parts matches with all other forms of dance in India. To tell a story, it balances music, choreography, hand movements, and spoken narratives to tell stories. The stories are told by three groups of performers: the actors (who do not speak), the percussionists, and the vocalists. Traditionally, the actors were all males, but that has evolved so that both men and women can perform the Kathakali dance
