In the years that follow, art and thought flourish and the ambitious Athenian statesman Pericles coordinates aunique group of artists to transform the rocky hill into the exceptional monument also called the “Sacred Rock”. The Parthenon, the Propylaea, the Erechtheionand the temple of Athena are the greatest monuments built during that time.

The Temple of Olympian Zeus found in the southeast of Athens is also referred to as Olympieion. Its construction lasted several centuries, from 510 BC to 131 AD and it is one of the greatest ancient temples of Zeus as well as one of the most famous marble buildings ever erected in the ancient world. There were originally 104 gigantic Corinthian columns 16 of which remain standing today, with one of them lying on the ground.
