Tbilisi and Mtskheta Day Trip

The archaeological research shows that the territory of Tbilisi was settled by humans 4th millennium BC.

Legends are saying that the current territory of Tbilisi was discovered by King Vakhtang Gorgosali in 458 AD when he went for hunting with a falcon in the forest. King’s falcon caught a pheasant but both birds fell into the hot spring water and died. King was impressed by this discovery and decided to build a city around this area.

Mtskheta approximately 20 kilometer north of Tbilisi has founded in 5 century BC and it was capital of the early Georgian kingdom of Iberia ( 3rd century BC-5th century AD). Mtskheta was known as Holy City by the Georgian Orthodox Church from 2014 and it was the first place for Christian activity in Georgia in the 4th century.

Stop At: The City-Museum Reserve of Mtskheta, Mtskheta Georgia

Mtskheta - a former capital city in Georgia, is one of the most visited places. The whole town is like a museum, where you can overview the history of this city back to centuries, with its incredible architecture, old buildings, and monuments.

Stop At: Tsminda Sameba Cathedral, Elia Hill, Tbilisi Georgia

Holy Trinity Cathedral of Tbilisi – The highest temple in Georgia. Height – 100,17 m., length – 70,450 m., width – 64,68 m. The complex combines 9 churches, including above-ground and underground parts, various auxiliary buildings and a beautiful garden.

Stop At: Metekhi Cathedral, Metekhi St, Tbilisi Georgia

Metekhi Church - located on the elevated cliff that overlooks the Mtkvari River. Resting upon the top of the hill was built by the Georgian king St Demetrius II circa 1278–1284 and is somewhat an unusual example of domed Georgian Orthodox church.

Stop At: Rike Park, The left bank of the Mtkvari River, Tbilisi Georgia

Cable car (Sabagiro), the rope-way, which connects Rike Park and Narikala Fortress. From there there is an incredible view on the capital city and on the Katlis Deda (Mother of Kartli) statue that is 20-meter aluminum sculpture, representing the main symbol of the city.

Narikala – The oldest defensive fortress was founded in the 4th century. The fortress overlooks a beautiful panorama of Tbilisi.

Stop At: National Botanical Garden of Georgia, Botanical St., 1, Tbilisi 0105 Georgia

Botanical Garden – area – 161 ha. There are rich collections of flora, unique plants, tropical orangery and the critically endangered species from different parts of the world.

Stop At: Abanotubani, Abano St, Tbilisi Georgia

Abanotubani – District of sulfur baths, where naturally hot mineral waters have healing capabilities. The foundation of the city is associated with the discovery of these waters in the 5th century. Arab geographer Ibn Hawqal (10th century) and Venetian traveler Marco Polo (13th – 14th centuries) provide historical information on sulfur baths. Most of the baths that still remain are influenced by Persian architecture and date back to the 12th and 13th centuries.

Shardeni Street – The pedestrian street is famous for galleries, workshops, restaurants, open cafes and clubs.

Pass By: The Bridge of Peace, Tbilisi Georgia

The Bridge of Peace runs across the Kura River, is located between the Metekhsky Bridge and the Baratashvili Bridge, the bridge is a model of modern architecture, which is a novelty for Old Tbilisi.

Pass By: Rezo Gabriadze Marionette Theater, Shavteli St., 26, Tbilisi 0105 Georgia

Gabriadze Theater – The first Georgian puppet theater. It was founded in 1980. There is a clock tower at the entrance of the theater from where mechanical dolls are making a performance for one minute and a half at 12 o’clock. The theater organizes tours in different countries and participates in various festivals.
