Rocinha is a slum located in the southern zone of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The name comes from a farm, a "garden" that in the 1920s was taken by the expansion of urban sprawl. In 1927 was subdivided by Castro Guidas & Cia, paralyzed by the city, Rocinha was growing without any regularization of land. In 1970, the favela had 130,000 inhabitants according to the IBGE.
