It is in a very quiet a part of the town offering you peace and tranquillity. After settling down and dinner at one of the most charming and quaint traditional Bosnian restaurants, you are going to be guided through Mostar, where you will learn the magnificent history behind this amazing city. It is believed that before Herzegovina fell to the Ottomans, the settlement of Mostar had only 19 houses with a small suspension bridge that united both banks. The men that guarded this bridge were called mostari (bridge keepers) and it is presumed that the town is named after them. Herzegovina officially came under the Ottoman rule in 1482. It didn't take long for Mostar to become the centre of Ottoman administrative and military rule in Herzegovina. The old town (carsija) that developed around the new stone bridge (Stari most) was completed by Dalmatian craftsmen, under in Ottoman design, in 1566. This oriental part of the city still preserves its old tradition of highly skilled craftsmen in metal engraving, painting and rug-weaving. With the old bridge at the centre, new mahalas (quarters) began to spring up on both sides of the Neretva. Mosques and medresas (religious schools) were constructed as Islam spread through the growing town. In the late 16th and early 17th centuries, many of Mostar's most beautiful and significant Islamic structures were built.

Day 2: Holy Medjugorje

Stop At: Medjugorie Regina Pacis, Ulice Kralice Mira 75, Medjugorje 88266 Bosnia and Herzegovina
After breakfast we will drive to Medjugorje. Medjugorje is a unique event in the modern world. In the last twenty seven years it has attracted over 30 million pilgrims from all over the world. Here they again discover peace, and their closeness to God. For those of you who have never been to Medjugorje, you will experience one of the most spiritual, and peaceful places on earth. One of the best descriptions of Medjugorje I have heard is: "Medjugorje is a place where Heaven touches earth". If you are in need of some spiritual enrichment, come with us on what can be a life changing pilgrimage to Medjugorje in Bosnia/Herzegovina. It is said that you dont decide to go -- you have been called for a reason. The parish of Medjugorje is situated in Herzegovina, 25 km southwest of Mostar. Medjugorje, (the name is of Slavic origin, and signifies a region between two mounts) with the villages of Bijakovici, Vionica, Miletina and Zurmanci, forms a Roman-Catholic parish where today approximately 4000 inhabitants live. The pastoral care of the parish is confided to the priests of the Herzegovinian Franciscan Province of the Assumption of Mary. The whole region is inhabited by Croatians who received Christianity 13 centuries ago. In historical documents, the village was mentioned in 1599 for the first time. The present parish was founded in 1892 and dedicated to St. James the Apostle, protector of pilgrims. Until June 24, 1981, Medjugorje lived like all other villages of this region: people worked on their land, planted tobacco and vineyards, produced wine and vegetables to acquire just enough for a modest life for their families. Because of social circumstances, many went out into the world: over the ocean and to Western European countries, as well as into towns in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia. When The apparitions of Our Lady started in1981, the life of the parish changed: Our Lady chose for her witnesses and co-workers not only the six visionaries, but the entire parish and its pilgrims. This was expressly told in the following message: “I have chosen this parish in a special way and I wish to lead it.” (March 1st, 1984) Fr Jozo Zovko O.F.M. was parish priest at this time.

Since 1981, in a small village named Medjugorje in Bosnia-Herzegovina, The Blessed Virgin Mary has been appearing and giving messages to the world. She tells us that God has sent her to this world and, these years she is spending with us are a time of Grace granted by God. In her own words she tells us, "I have come to tell the world that God exists. He is the fullness of life, and to enjoy this fullness and peace, you must return to God". Since the apparitions of Our Lady began in 1981, millions of pilgrims of all faiths, from all over the world, have visited Medjugorje on pilgrimage and have left spiritually strengthened and renewed. Countless unbelievers and physically or mentally afflicted, have been converted and healed. You owe it to yourself and your loved ones, to investigate with an open mind and heart the events which are occurring in Medjugorje.

You will attend Holy Mass in English at 10am in St James’s Church, followed by introductory talk about the apparitions of Our Lady and a guided tour of the Shrine. In the afternoon you will climb the hill of Apparitions (Podbrodo) for a time of prayer at the place where Our Blessed Mother first appeared to the visionaries on the 24th June 1981. Here we will share with you the story of the first days of the apparitions, this is always a special moment at this holy place. Dinner - At 6pm all pilgrims gather in the Church for the Rosary. The time of the Apparition is 6.40pm, this is usually marked with a short silence. At 7.00pm there is parish Mass in Croatian followed by blessings, prayers for healing and the Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary.
