Best Hikes in Lake Louise

Lake Louise, located in Banff National Park, is a hub for some of the most picturesque and well-loved hiking trails in the Canadian Rockies. Each trail offers unique views of the stunning alpine landscape, making it a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts.

The Best Hikes in and around Lake Louise

Lake Agnes Tea House

This moderate 7.4-kilometer round trip hike starts from the shores of Lake Louise and climbs to the charming Lake Agnes Tea House. The trail offers beautiful views of Lake Louise and the surrounding mountains. From the tea house, you can enjoy the serene Lake Agnes, and if you're up for more, you can extend your hike to the Big Beehive for even more spectacular views.

Plain of Six Glaciers

Another classic, this trail extends from the eastern end of Lake Louise and heads towards the Victoria Glacier, offering impressive views along the way. It’s about 13.8 kilometers return and features a historic tea house where you can rest and grab a bite. The trail provides a fantastic perspective on the geological forces shaping the Rockies.

The Big Beehive

After visiting Lake Agnes Tea House, you can continue on to the Big Beehive for a total of 10.3 kilometers return. This hike offers one of the best views of Lake Louise and the Bow Valley. It's a steady climb, but the panoramic views from the top are well worth the effort.

Sentinel Pass via Larch Valley

This stunning hike starts at Moraine Lake, a short drive from Lake Louise. The trail takes you through the golden larch trees of Larch Valley (especially spectacular in fall) and up to Sentinel Pass. It's about 11.6 kilometers return and offers breathtaking views of the Ten Peaks, Paradise Valley, and Mount Temple.

Fairview Mountain

For those looking for a more strenuous hike, Fairview Mountain offers a challenging climb and exceptional views. The hike is about 10 kilometers return with a significant elevation gain. From the summit, you can see both Lake Louise and Lake Agnes, as well as the expansive backcountry.

Saddleback Pass

Starting from the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, this trail heads towards the Saddleback Pass near Mount Fairview. It's a shorter, though steep, hike of about 7.4 kilometers return, providing stunning views of the surrounding peaks and valleys.

Each of these Lake Louise hikes bring their own unique perspective on the Lake Louise area, showcasing glacier-fed lakes, rugged mountain peaks, and dense alpine forests. Always remember to check trail conditions before heading out, as weather in the mountains can change rapidly. Also, be prepared with appropriate gear and bear spray, as wildlife is active in the area.
