The Medieval Castles Tour

Come with me on a fantastical journey into the Middle Ages as we travel the winding country roads along the River Meuse and spend some time discovering our marvelous heritage. We will visit some of our most enchanting castles and chateaus on a full day excursion that will have you thinking you’ve stepped into a fairy tale.

There are nearly 3,000 castles scattered throughout Belgium - some are still occupied by descendants of the originally aristocracy, while some are in ruins. We will visit several of these fascinating sites located along the serpentine river within the Meuse Valley and along the rocky outcrops of the Ardennes. Our medieval castles tour will take us to the historical cities and picturesque villages of Namur, Dinant and Celles.

Your medieval castles tour will be one of the most memorable experiences of your journey through the magical countryside of Belgium.

Itinerary

Stop At: Namur Tourist Office, Place de la Station, Namur 5000 Belgium

In Namur we will find the charming castle and gardens of Annevoie. This breathtakingly beautiful castle is famous for its gorgeous water features that rival France’s Versailles. The lovely flower gardens here contain more than fifty fountains with cascading water jets and a romantic grand canal. Another beautiful medieval fortress of Namur is the Castle of Faulx, and the popular neo-gothic styled Castle of Antoing.

Duration: 3 hours

Stop At: Dinant Aventure, Rue de la Carriere 1, Dinant 5500 Belgium

We will travel to Dinant, where the incredible Castle of Freys welcomes us to a 14th century fortress with classical gardens featuring a maze and orangeries, and a Rococo style chapel. Dinant is also where you’ll find the Castle of Lavaux-Saint-Anne, and the Ruins of Poilvache and Crevecoer. Castle Poilvache is one of the largest medieval fortresses of the Meuse Valley from the 12th century. The Ruins of Crevecoer have a tragically romantic story behind the name Crevecoer, which means literally “break the heart”. In 1554 King Henry II of France attacked this castle of Dinant, and when its last three knights perished defending the castle, their wives threw themselves from the clifftops rather than be taken by the enemy.

Duration: 4 hours

Stop At: Castle Veves, Rue de Furfooz 3, Houyet 5561 Belgium

The lovely picturesque village of Celles provides a wondrous destination for our medieval castles tour, offering its incredible “Sleeping Beauty” castle at the Chateau de Veves. This enchanting military fortress dates as far back as the 8th century, with magnificent towers, spires and turrets giving it a romantic, fairy tale appearance. This is an exciting and adventurous attraction for children, who get to dress as knights and princesses during their tour of the Veves Castle.
