5 Days Tour Modern & Ancient Azerbaijan

The fife-day Azerbaijan cultural tour will introduce you to the culture and history of the Azerbaijan people, as well as the unique ancient and modern architecture of the country. The tour program is aimed to give you an opportunity to see Baku that considerably changed in the last decade and now looks like a modern European city, and then visit the Azerbaijan historical regions, which still preserve an old lifestyle.

Itinerary

Day 1: Baku

Stop At: Upland Park, Baku Azerbaijan
Baku's Upland Park is the highest point in the Azerbaijani capital, opening a panoramic view of the city and its bay.

Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: Baku Old City, Neftchilar Ave, Baku 1000 Azerbaijan
Old City or Inner City (Azerbaijani: İçərişəhər) is the historical core of Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. The Old City is the most ancient part of Baku, which is surrounded by walls which were easily defended. In 2007, the Old City had a population of about 3000 people. In December 2000, the Old City of Baku, including the Palace of the Shirvanshahs and Maiden Tower, became the first location in Azerbaijan to be classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Stop At: Baku Boulevard, Neftchilar avenue, Baku Azerbaijan
Baku Boulevard, also known as the seaside national park, is the favorite promenade of many Baku residents and visitors. Its establishment goes back to more than 100 years, to a time when Baku's oil barons built their mansions along the Caspian shore, and the seafront was gradually built up.

Stop At: Heydar Aliyev Cultural Center, Heydar Aliyev Avenue, 1/1, Baku 1033 Azerbaijan
The iconic Heydar Aliyev Centre was designed by Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid and is famous for its distinctive flowing, curved style that eschews sharp angles. As a brilliant piece of post-modern architecture, the building’s shape is an eternal cycle, connecting the past with the present. The building houses a conference hall, gallery halls, museums and more and seeks to unite people of diverse backgrounds in a place of shared ideas. The building won the London Design Museum award in 2014.

Day 2: Baku - Gobustan & Mud Volcanoes

Stop At: Gobustan Rock Art, 60 km South of Baku, Baku Azerbaijan
Gobustan State Reserve located west of the settlement of Gobustan, about 40 miles (64 km) southwest of the centre of Baku was established in 1966 when the region was declared as a national historical landmark of Azerbaijan in an attempt to preserve the ancient carvings, mud volcanoes and gas-stones in the region. Gobustan State Reserve is very rich in archeological monuments, the reserve has more than 6,000 rock carvings, which depict primitive people, animals, battle-pieces, ritual dances, bullfights, boats with armed oarsmen, warriors with lances in their hands, camel caravans, pictures of sun and stars, on the average dating back to 5,000-20,000 years.

Stop At: Mud Volcanoes, Dasgil Hill, Qobustan 3700 Azerbaijan
Azerbaijan has the most mud volcanoes of any country, spread broadly across the country. 350 of the 800 volcanoes of the world are in the Azerbaijani Republic. Local people call them “yanardagh” (burning mountain), “pilpila” (terrace), “gaynacha” (boiling water) and “bozdag” (grey mountain) alongside its geographical name – mud volcanoes.

Day 3: Baku - Shemakha - Lahich - Sheki

Stop At: Diri Baba Mausoleum, Qobustan Azerbaijan
The Diri Baba Mausoleum – is a mausoleum of Sheikh Diri Baba, located in Maraza village of Gobustan Region of Azerbaijan.
Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: Juma Mosque, Nariman Narimanov St., Shamakhi Azerbaijan
This oldest and largest mosque in Azerbaijan, Shamakhi Juma, according to the legend was built in the 8th century when Shamakhi was chosen as residence by an Arabian caliph. The initial Arabian inscription on the portal of the mosque said that the mosque had constructed in 744. Therefore Shamakhi Juma is considered as one of the earliest mosques of Transcaucasia. The composition of Shamakhi Juma has no analogues in Azerbaijan. The architecture of the building is as follows - the huge hall for prayers is divided into three independent sections connected by open wide doorways.

Stop At: Yeddi Gumbaz Mausoleum, DNdN Qorqud St., Shamakhi 5600 Azerbaijan
At the foot of Gulistan Fortress is located Yeddi Gumbez Mausoleum or “Seven Domes”. This is how people named Shamakhi tomb of Shirvan Dynasty rulers. There the notorious representatives of Shirvan Dynasty were buried. The monument's name is defined be the number of gravestones in the crypt. Today the gravestones look like half-destroyed stone domes as if grown directly from under the ground in the middle of deserted graveyard. Therefore the atmosphere of this district seems a little mysterious.

Stop At: Lahich, Lahich, Daghlig Shirvan Region
Lahij is a village and municipality on the southern slopes of Greater Caucasus within the Ismailli Region of Azerbaijan. Population is approximately 860 people who speak the Tat language.
Lahij is a notable place in Azerbaijan, with its authentic handicrafts traditions, particularly related to copper. The village's carpet and rug crafts are also well known in Azerbaijan and the South Caucasus. Lahij has an old sewage system (some experts claim that it was built 1000–1500 years ago). Due to frequent earthquakes local people have developed sophisticated and authentic construction techniques.

Day 4: Sheki - Kish village

Stop At: Sheki Khan's Palace, Sheki 0055 Azerbaijan
The Palace of Shaki Khans in Shaki, Azerbaijan was a summer residence for the Shaki Khans. It was built in 1797 by Muhammed Hasan Khan.
Duration: 1 hour

Stop At: Sheki Fortress, Ahundova Av. 205, Sheki 5500 Azerbaijan
Located at the top of the hilly north-eastern part of the city, Sheki fortress was built during the reign of the first Sheki Khan Haji Chalabi (1743-1755). The fortress was a stronghold of the Khan’s stronghold, within which a number of the city’s buildings were erected.

Stop At: Church of Kish, Sheki Azerbaijan
The Church of Kish also known by different sources as Church of Saint Elishe or Holy Mother of God Church is an inactive 12th or 13th century Caucasian Albanian church located in the village of Kiş approximately 5 km north of Shaki, Azerbaijan.It has functioned at different times as a Caucasian Albanian Apostolic church.
