Password Protection and Privacy
The most important element in any password protection system is the privacy problem. Most people do not want other people to be able to read (or use) their passwords. If your code stores a password in plaintext, it can be read at will by those who know how to find it.

Solutions to Protecting Your Passwords
So how can we solve these problems? First of all, forget the words "trust us we will not read your passwords unless you need us to." There is no reason to believe that. Even if the people running a service for you are telling the truth, they might be "forced to" for a variety of reasons. Let us say that its fine with you for some to "contain" your password privacy. You trust the organization running the authenticating agent. The question then becomes one of what are they doing to protect your passwords from attackers?

Do not leave Password Keys Anywhere
One solution to protect passwords is by encryption. However, this solution is nontrivial. A key is required to encrypt and decrypt your password. This transforms the question from a password storage problem into a password "key storage" (and use) problem.

Of course, the authenticating software needs the "password key" to be able to validate you when you log in. We do not want our authentication software to require human intervention if we can help it, so the key will probably need to sit where our software can access it. The problem is that if the software can access it, a successful attacker can too. Our goal thus becomes finding a way to make the cryptographic key as hard as possible to find. That is a form of password protection called "security through obscurity," which is a practice we should avoid if at all possible. So obviously, hiding keys isn't a very easy solution either.

True Password Protection

The simple solution to a seemingly complex problem is to prevent the possibility of attacks!

Those that perform, or try to perform these attacks operate in many ways, but mainly it is through the communication with your computer from outside. Whether is is spyware, adware, certain cookies, or a more complex software download, they usually need this 'back door' to get in. Prevention of this "back door" opportunity requires constant monitoring of files on your hard drive that may be of this type.

The recommended programs not only do that, but they will take your password protection one step further..by finding out WHO may be trying to 'attack' your computer - something we all would appreciate knowing!

Successful Business Security Policy
There are two parts to any security policy. One deals with preventing external security threats to maintain the integrity of the network. The second deals with reducing internal security risks by defining appropriate use of network resources.

Addressing external threats is technology-oriented. While there are plenty of Internet technologies available to reduce external network threats: firewalls, antivirus software, spyware fighters, intrusion-detection systems, and e-mail filters and others... these resources are mostly implemented by IT staff and are undetected by the user.

Network security inside a company is, however, a management issue. Implementing an acceptable use policy, which by definition regulates employee behavior, requires tact and diplomacy. more..
Norton Antivirus Cracked
Software giant Symantec announced that it will add product activation technology to all of its consumer products, starting with Norton Antivirus 2004. The idea is to prevent large-scale piracy operations from thieves who counterfeit Symantec programs and offer them to customers on the Web.

The company estimates at least 3.6 million bogus copies of its programs are sold annually. The measure may help alleviate the counterfeit problem, but the product activation itself is not exactly waterproof. The Register had no problem of finding a key generator on the Web and installing a full version of Norton Antivirus 2004 on several PCs without Symantec knowing it.

When you buy the product on a CD, you have to plug in a software key printed on the CD sleeve. From there, a wizard checks the hardware configuration, including the hard drive serial number and configuration. read more..
Managed Security Demand Surging
The worldwide market for managed security services will reach nearly $4.9 billion in 2006, up from $1.3 billion last year, according to a computer security research firm.

More companies will outsource their security as threats grow from both inside and outside the corporate network. Small and midsize businesses with 1,000 to 4,900 employees are and will continue to be the biggest buyers of managed security services due to their lack of security personnel and expertise.

The market for outsourced security has undergone a massive shakeout with companies either going out of business or selling off their managed security operations. For example... Symantec acquired Riptech, a managed security provider. more..

The United States is facing an alarming shortage in skilled workers to protect the nation's critical infrastructures from cyberterrorism and other threats, several homeland security and high-tech experts said.

There is going to be more demand for people with information technology skills. It is a huge problem we have in this country; not having enough people with adequate skills and training. The need to make information security should soon be second nature.

A new strategy aims to be a "living document" that will grow and change as the technology changes. The document will contain sections that address home users security and network security issues. It also will categorize critical infrastructure issues by industry, such as water filtration, electricity or telecommunications. read past article..
