Protection from Avenues of attack
Unpatched computers, particularly those running Windows, are vulnerable to a variety of avenues of attack. Because of the vulnerability, CryptoAPI might not recognize that a second digital certificate is bogus and would therefore fail to warn PC user. The issuer could then use that unauthorized certificate to redirect that person to a second Web site for conducting an online transaction using Secure Socket Layer. SSL, an encryption technology widely used in online transactions, lets Web servers scramble credit card numbers and other information so they can't be seen by prying eyes. In this instance, a person might start a legitimate transaction at one Web site, then be unknowingly redirected to a second, bogus site, analysts said.
Security analysts say the problem could become significant, since so many computers use software containing the flaw. It is much more widespread than people think. Because this has to do with CryptoAPI, the problem may have existed for about five years. more on credit card theft.. |

Companies Exposed by Social weaknesses Social engineers normally do a lot of research on their targets before attacking. A social engineer needs to understand the corporate culture, the corporate structure, the organisational chart, who has access to what information, and where in the company that information resides.
|
Valuable data can often be found in the company's recycle or garbage bins. These things ought to be locked and kept on private property. Sensitive files should be shredded before they are thrown out.
In addition to the usual technical security procedures like regular port scanning and spyware scanning for example - organisations need to rigorously enforce security policies and train staff to be alert to the dangers posed by social engineers, particularly in companies that might be targeted by industrial spies. more.. |

Hackers Accessing Your Company Another problem companies and governmental organisations are more aware of since 11 September is criminal or terrorist activity within their organisations. They often also battle against unscrupulous recruitment agencies that regularly poach their staff.
|
The answer to all these problems is a PBX security system that sits between the telecommunications provider and the company PBX.
PBX firewall and intrusion detection systems effectively solves the last back door security problem on the data network. It logs all call progress information and characterises all call types. Basically it gives the same visibility to your voice network as your data network.
The system can terminate all calls made to certain telephone numbers, for example, competitors or even known criminals. It can also bar all incoming calls from certain telephone numbers, for example, recruitment agencies. hackers accessing your company.. |

The consumer-protection agency has tracked identity-theft since 1998, but exact figures have been hard to come by as many victims never report the crime to criminal authorities, opting instead to work with banks or other businesses to clear their names.
|
The FTC surveyed some 4,000 adults this spring to come up with the most comprehensive picture yet of the fast-growing crime.
Amid the grim statistics, the agency found a silver lining: After nearly doubling for two to three years, new incidents of identity theft are growing more slowly and tend to involve less money. That's because banks are wising up to the problem, making it more difficult for scam artists to set up fraudulent credit cards, and consumers are spotting suspicious activity on their accounts earlier, said Howard Beales, director of the FTC's consumer-protection division. Identity theft strikes twelve percent... |

The term "gray hat" was originally coined by the L0pht - one of the best-known old-school hacking groups, pronounced "the loft" - for those who wanted to stand apart from corporate security testers but also distance themselves from the notorious black hats. This category, defined by this phrase, has come to encompass most independent security experts and consultants, as well as many corporate security researchers.
|
The term 'gray hat' represents the independent researcher who didn't have a vested interest in any particular company or product. Some don't believe that a gray area should exist, even for hackers who break into a company's servers only to inform its network administrators about the vulnerabilities.
Now, if you are gray, you are black. It's not that what you do is not understood, but it comes down to WHAT you are actually doing. When is hacking a crime.. |
