Understanding your Computer's Registry

Why is a clean registry important?
Keeping your Windows Registry clean is crucial for optimum system performance. To put it simply, the Registry is the database that holds all of the important Windows settings including software, hardware, and system information. For most people’s concern, the registry contains a list of programs that are all set to run while your computer is on. Looking at your Windows Registry is the easiest way to identify potential spyware, etc. that may be running without your authorization.
The Registry can bog Down a PC
Over time a PC’s Registry can become large with obsolete and invalid or expired information. For example, when programs are uninstalled there will often be orphaned Registry keys that get left behind. Even the simple act of deleting a folder can leave unused and unnecessary entries in the database, and usually does.
Cleaning the Registry
Usually, the first time people run an anti-spyware program or scanner it finds hundreds to thousands of Registry entries that need to be addressed!
Invalid registry items slow down your system and malicious items might even cause system instability, or permanent harm. Your computer will probably boot up slowly and programs will be noticeably sluggish. This is why it is very important to use a good Registry cleaner or Spyware Scanner application. (Spyware scanners are built to handle these problems, as well as the finding of hidden files that may not be indicated through a peek at the Registry.)
