Hiking adventure through the Stockholm archipelago

An 8-day hiking adventure that combines the sights of Stockholm with the beautiful scenery on its doorstep. Visit the county of Sörmland with its rolling hills, deep forests, coastal views, inland lakes and charming villages.

The trip also takes you out to a handful of the islands that make up part of the Stockholm archipelago - a wonder comprising 30,000 islands made during the last ice age and right on Stockholm's doorstep. Here you hike coastal paths and admire sea views stretching to the horizon.

Use boats to transport you between the different areas of the trip, each trip enjoying beautiful views of the wooded coasts and archipelago's unique scenery. A well deserved chance to rest your legs between hikes.

Hiking is easy to moderate with flexible days that can be adapted to suit your needs.

Itinerary

Day 1: ARRIVE STOCKHOLM

Stop At: Ecopark, Stockholm Sweden
Today you can choose to hike through Stockholm’s unique Ecopark - the world’s first National Park to be located within a bustling city. The Ekopark is a green oasis combining cultural heritage and natural features. Hike through ancient forests, visit palaces and bathe from waterside rocks - right here, in the city centre!
Duration: 3 hours

Stop At: Sodermalm, Stockholm Sweden
Alternatively concentrate on the vibrant ‘Söder’ region of Stockholm and walk the many quaint alleys, passing historic cottages and churches and a handful of impressive viewpoints across the city.

Day 2: TULLGARN PALACE to TROSA

Stop At: Tullgarn Palace, Vagnharad 610 74 Sweden
Today you are transferred to Sörmland and the impressive Tullgarn Palace, an 18th century royal palace located on the seashore with magnificent views.
Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: Sormlandsleden, Frosjons Strand Gnesta Station, Gnesta 64631 Sweden
You then hike southwards enjoying the coastal scenery of the hiking path. The hike follows the Sörmlandsleden hiking trail, passing forests and open countryside, wonderful viewpoints and Kömote beach for a quick swim.
Hiking distance; Tullgarn to Trosa 12-19 km (moderate)
Duration: 6 hours

Stop At: Trosa, Trosa, Sodermanland County
Your hike ends at the seaside town of Trosa - a seaside village surrounded by a marvellous archipelago.
Duration: 1 hour

Day 3: TROSA to STENDÖRREN to SÄVÖ to SANDVIK to TROSA

Stop At: Stendorren Nature Reserve, E4:an mellan Stockholm och Nykoping. Ta av vid Vagnharad eller Tystberga och kor vag 219 mot Studsvik/Stendorren., Tystberga 61060 Sweden
Today you are transferred to Stendörren nature reserve, an archipelago recognised for its distinct feeling of peace and tranquillity. Here you hike across the many islands using their intriguing system of suspension bridges.
Duration: 2 hours

Stop At: Savo Nature Reserve, 1 Saevoe, Vasterljung 610 75 Sweden
You are then taken by boat the short way to Sävö island nature reserve to continue your hike along the Sörmlandsleden around the island.
Duration: 3 hours

Stop At: Sandviks badplats, Nynäs slott 611 99, 610 75 Tystberga, Sweden
The boat then takes you back to the mainland, and you hike on to Sandvik beach, from where you are collected and transferred back to Trosa.
Hiking distance; Stendörren to Sävö to Sandvik 12 km (easy), Boats included: Studsvik to Sävö 15 mins; Sävö to Trosa 20 mins

Day 4: TROSA to NYNÄSHAMN

Stop At: Trosa, Trosa, Sodermanland County
Today you have a free day in Trosa to visit the village, harbour, church and museum. If you feel like stretching your legs before boarding the boat then there is a short walk available through the village and along the river.

Stop At: Nynashamn, Nynashamn
You then board the boat for your journey from Sörmland to Nynäshamn, located in the southern part of the Stockholm archipelago. Once at your accommodation, you can choose to take an evening walk enjoying the long daylight hours along Nynäshamn’s best kept secret, ‘Strandvägen’ – a small winding road following the coast. Here you enjoy stunning views across the cliffs over the open horizon. The route was created in connection with the Olympic sailing events held here in 1912, and shows off the Stockholm archipelago at its very best. Your accommodation tonight is along Strandvägen with its exceptional location by the water’s edge.

Day 5: NYNÄSHAMN to HÄRINGE/LÖVHAGEN to NYNÄSHAMN

Stop At: Strandvagen, Nynashamn 149 34 Sweden
This morning you have two choices, either you can walk direct from your hotel along beautiful Strandvägen into Lövhagen recreation area which offers many hiking trails, swimming opportunities and great sea views. All within easy reach of your hotel and flexible so that you can find time to enjoy the hotel spa.

Stop At: Haringe palace, Vasterhaninge, Haninge 137 41 Sweden
Alternatively head with public transport to Häringe nature reserve which is located on a coastal peninsula. It is a region of manor houses, giant oaks, broad-leaved woods, coniferous forest and saltwater bays. The birdlife is rich, and white-tailed eagles are common. At Häringe, visitors are greeted by Häringe manor from 1657, although the present exterior is a product of the 1770s. Both Gustav Vasa and Gustav II Adolf are former owners of the estate. The oval room in the sea wing was furnished for Greta Garbo, a regular guest to the manor. Find time to relax in the hotel’s spa looking out across the ocean!

Day 6: NYNÄSHAMN to NÅTTARÖ to ÅLÖ to UTÖ

Stop At: Nattaro Island, Nattaro Island
Back on the boat today from Nynäshamn to Nåttarö island with its vast sandy beaches and viewpoint over the archipelago.
Duration: 2 hours

Stop At: Alo och Rano, Uto 130 56 Sweden
Then a short boat trip over to Ålö with yet another deserted sandy beach and wonderful fish restaurant offering local delicacies.
Duration: 3 hours

Stop At: Uto, Uto
You are then transfered to the main village on Utö. Utö enjoys a typical archipelago scenery with forests, open country, smooth waterside rocks and hidden white sandy beaches. Gruvbyn village had an iron mine which was worked as early as the 1100s and is open to visitors. The village buzzes with life in the summer months.

Day 7: UTÖ to FJÄRDLÅNG to STOCKHOLM

Stop At: 820 50 Gruvbyn, Sweden
After a free morning on Utö to explore the north of the island on foot following its coastal hiking trail, you island hop over to neighbouring Fjärdlång.
Duration: 3 hours

Stop At: Fjärdlång, 130 55 Dalarö, Sweden
Fjärdlång is a remote island deservedly declared a nature reserve. Don’t miss a trip to the island’s highest point for spectacular views across the archipelago.

Stop At: Stockholm, Stockholm
Then it's an impressive cruise back to Stockholm, as you watch the archipelago change from the remote outer islands to the more inhabited regions near town, with the homes of the rich and famous lining the water front.

Day 8: IN STOCKHOLM

Today you arrive at Stockholm and you free time to explore the picturesque city of Stockholm. Often referred to as the 'Venice of the North', Stockholm is unquestionably a unique and beautiful city all year round, not only due to its location on 14 islands with its infinite presence of water, but also because of its combination of nature, colourful architecture and ancient history. And you need never walk far to appreciate the impressive views stretching across the Baltic water as it winds past the city walls.

Furthermore, stroll through 13th century Gamla Stan, Stockholm's charming old town, where you cannot help but feel its medieval atmosphere as you wander through the cobblestone streets past narrow, colourful houses of yesteryear.

Visit the impressive Vasa Museum to admire the mighty Vasa Ship
