It is the biggest stupa in Sri Lanka. Simply known also as the Great Stupa, the Ruvanvalisaya was constructed by Dutthagamani after he became king in 161 BCE.

It was a major monastery site of Mahayana, and is the second largest stupa in the island today.

It is said to be the the first Buddhist temple in Sri Lanka. It enshrined the collarbone of Lord Buddha.
