Itinerary

Stop At: Bentota Beach, Bentota 80500 Sri Lanka

Start your tour at 8am in the coastal city of Bentota. An experienced cyclist will meet you, along with a backup vehicle. The bicycles and other equipment are provided, as well as first aid equipment and a support crew to deal with any difficulties that may arise.

First, cycle through some paddy fields, where a farmer tells you about the chena (seasonal paddy) plantations of Sri Lanka and how the monsoonal rains affect them. Then continue on to visit a historical Buddhist temple nearby, Kande Vihara, where a monk explains the history of the place. This temple features some beautiful architecture that is quite interesting to view, as well as the image house with its Buddhism-related imagery.

Your next destination is a cinnamon garden. You will be taken on a tour to learn more about the spice and how it is harvested. Plus, see how the various qualities of cinnamon are processed, and purchase fresh cinnamon to take home with you, if you wish.

Your tour then takes you to a toddy collection point. You will see how toddy is collected from coconut palms and how the alcohol is created, and you can taste different aged and fresh toddies to learn about the differences in quality. You can buy some toddy as a souvenir here or for your own consumption.

Following this, bike through a rubber plantation to see how the sap (milk) from the rubber trees is collected. Afterward, visit the rubber factory and see how the sap is turned into rubber with the addition of chemicals and further processing. There will be some basic goods such as flip-flops or rubber mats for sale here.

The final destination on your tour is a modern fishing village. Observe a bit of the lifestyle of a fisherman in the present day, and learn how technology has improved their living. You will be able to see the boats that are pulled up or visit a local's house.

Note: The tour visits all these places but the order may differ slightly.
