Spyware from North Korea Targets South Army

September 2008

North Korea has tried to hack into the computers of South Korean army
officers, officials said, one week after disclosing an espionage case
involving a woman posing as a defector.

An email sent to "many" officers contained a hacking program designed
automatically to steal stored files if the recipient opens it, a South
Korean defence ministry spokesman said.

A colonel was among those who have received the email virus since June.

The ministry said no classified information had been leaked.

"It is impossible for hackers to break into the computer system of our
military which operates a separate intra network," a spokesman told AFP.

But the North's cyber attack prompted the army to update its
anti-hacking software and officers had been asked not to store sensitive
data on their personal computers, he said.
