Bank Customers Security Breach Numbers Soar

Sept 2008

Computer tapes lost by Bank of New York Mellon may have contained
information about 12 million people nationwide, nearly three times the
number the bank first disclosed in May, bank officials said Thursday.

It is not known yet how many additional individuals and businesses in
Connecticut may be at risk of identity theft and fraud. New York Mellon
is expected to release those numbers next week.

New York Mellon disclosed in May that the security breach affected
497,333 Connecticut residents, most of them depositors of People's
United Bank in Bridgeport.

Gov. M. Jodi Rell said Thursday she expects the Connecticut number to
now go up.
