Nevsky Prospekt is St. Petersburg's main street. It stretches from the Admilarty building up to Alexander Nevsky Monastery. St. Petersburg was the first city in Russia to be built in accordance to a plan with Nevsky Prospect being a central part of the original plan. This is one of the oldest streets of the city and each building here has a rich history behind it. Kazan Catherdal, Stroganov Palace, the Zinger building, Eliseevsky Store - are just some of the famous buildings that you can see on Nevsky.

The present Stroganov Palace appeared after the renovation and complete rearrangement of two-storeyed houses next to the Green Bridge across the Moika River. The work over the buildings has been carried by the architect Rastrelli in 1753rd and 1754th. It was owned by the Stroganoff dynasty until 1918th.

Dom Kompanii Zinger is an architectural monument of the federal importance. It is also known as House of the Book. It is located at the intersection of the Nevsky Prospekt and the Griboyedov Canal.

Construction of the cathedral started in 1801 and continued for ten years under the supervision of Alexander Sergeyevich Stroganov until its completion in 1811. The architect Andrey Voronikhin modelled the building on St. Peter's Basilica in Rome.

St. Petersburg's most Russian looking building, the cathedral would seem at home on Moscow's Red Square with its onion shaped domes and multi colored facade. The Michailovsky Palace where the Russian Muesum is situated was built by the architect K. Rossi at the beginning of the XIX century for Alexander I's brother Michail. It became a museum of Russian art at the end of XIX century.

The elegant, monumental palace is a striking monument of the Baroque style in mid-18th-century Russian art. The palace is a brilliant example of the synthesis of architecture and decorative plastic art. For 150 years the palace served as an imperial residence. In November 1917, after the October Revolution, it was declared a museum.

The fortress was founded by Peter the Great in 1703. Besides the ancient fortifications, the fortress includes the Peter and Paul Cathedral, built in the early XVIII century.

Vasilievsky Island is connected to the historic heart of St. Petersburg by Palace Bridge. Until the mid-19th Century, Vasilievsky spit was in fact a trading port. With the passing of time, the buildings of the ensemble, designed by Jean Baptiste Toma de Tomon at the beginning of the 19th Century, found themselves occupied by predominantly cultural institutions.
