Tverskaya street for a long time has been the most busy street of the capital. The first references to the Tverskaya road are registered as early as in 12th century. The narrow street has been the starting point of the roads from Moscow to Tver, St. Petersburg and Novgorod. This street has been also the street of innovations. Here has been launched first diligences and trams; in 19th century, it has been the first street with asphalt and street lamps. Now it remains one of the most prominent streets of the city.

During the great patriotic war, in July 1941, Lenin’s body was evacuated to the Urals, and in April 1945 returned to Moscow. In the 1945 the central platform of the mausoleum was built. From 1953 to 1961 the body of Stalin was also kept in the mausoleum and it was renamed “The Mausoleum of Lenin and Stalin”.
