Pass By: Museum-Icebreaker Angara, Marshala Zhukova St., 36a, Irkutsk 664050 Russia

The Angara is the oldest steam-powered icebreaker preserved on the planet. Built in 1897 by Sir W.G. Armstrong, Whitworth & Co Ltd in Newcastle upon Tyne, England.

After a long wait in different places, the Angara was finally towed to Irkutsk, Russia and completely restored in the early 1990s.

Now the vessel has been turned into a museum dedicated to development of private and state shipping on Lake Baikal, as well as the history of the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway. Due to the Angara and another English icebreaker named “Baikal”, there was arranged quite an efficient transportation between two shores of the lake while the railway was being laid. During the years of the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905), the Baikal icebreakers played an important role in the transfer of a large number of troops from the west to the east, thereby improving the conditions for the surrender of the Russian Empire when signing the treaty of Portsmouth in the United States of America.
