Stop At: Tulum Archaeological Site, Carretera Federal, Cancun - Chetumal Km 230, 307, Tulum 77780 Mexico

The Archaeological Zone of Tulum is located on the east coast of Quintana Roo, also known as Riviera Maya. In ancient times, the area used to be called Zamá whose meaning in Mayan language is dawn. The name Tulum was given more recently, when the city was already in ruins. Different prints and paintings found on the site reveal that it was a place of worship and veneration of an alleged "descendant God." Most of the buildings date back to the post-classical period of the Mayan civilization, around the years 1200 to 1450.

Its wall, well known among visitors, runs along the north, south and west sides of the complex, since the east side is nestled in the Caribbean Sea.

Within the complex, the oldest and best preserved building is "El Castillo", which was built on the seashore; many archaeologists specialized in the area highlight the importance of this building for indigenous navigators, because originally, the construction served as a beacon that guided boats through the long coral reef.

In front of the Castle is the Temple of the Initial Series, where the oldest documented date of the place was found, which dates from 564 A.D. Another building of great relevance is the Temple of the Frescoes, whose bright blue and gray colors caught the attention of many English and North American explorers.
