Visit to the Santa Giulia Museum - City Museum

Unique in Italy and in Europe for exhibition design and venue, the City Museum is set up inside the monastery of Santa Giulia, incorporated into the oldest Benedictine monastery of San Salvatore built by the last Lombard king Desiderius and his wife Ansa in 753 AD on an area occupied by Roman domus. The monumental complex played a leading role even after the defeat inflicted on the Lombards by Charlemagne, becoming a place of stratified historical memories and a continuous source of surprising discoveries. According to tradition, taken up by Alessandro Manzoni in the Adelchi, the dramatic story of Ermengarda, daughter of King Desiderius and wife repudiated by Charlemagne, would have been consummated here.
The monumental complex of San Salvatore-Santa Giulia, together with the Archaeological Park of Roman Brescia, has been registered since June 2001 in the List of Heritage, promoted by UNESCO, on the serial site "The Longobards in Italy. The places of power (568-774 d. C.) ".
