Rome is the city where the Apostle Paul spent the last years of his life. A fervent preacher of the Gospel, he was arrested in 59 AD in Jerusalem under the charge of raising turmoil: as a roman citizen he appealed to the Supreme Court in Rome where he was judged not guilty in 62 AD. In those years he lived under custody and worked as a tent-maker in a building now turned into the church of S. Maria in via Lata.

His body was then buried closeby in the vast cemetery along the Ostiense Way in a marble sarcophagus later covered by a memorial church dedicated to him in 324 AD by order of the emperor Constantine. The present, magnificent basilica of S. Paul is a much bigger and impostive version commissioned by the Emperor Honorius and completed in 395 AD.
