The "other side" of River Tevere, in Rome, is a colored, friendly, lively neighborhood, well known for its "trattorie" and wine bars. But the narrow and charming streets hide some of the most outstanding art treasures in the capital. Villa Farnesina, a renaissance mansion built by a rich Senese banker, hosts the works of the best known Italian artists of that golden age: Raffaello Sanzio, Guilio Romano, Baldassarre Peruzzi and Sebastiano del Piombo.

Stop At: Villa Farnesina, Via della Lungara 230, Rome Italy

This villa, the first of suburban Roman residences of the Renaissance age, was built between 1596 and 1512 under the direction of Baldassarre Peruzzi, to become the local mansion of the rich Senese banker Agostino Chigi. After the owner's death in 1520, the villa went through a period of decay, until it was acquired by Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, thus getting the current name of Farnesina. Since 1927 it is property of the Italian state.
The interiors feature extraordinary decorations, by the most important artists of the time: Raffaello Sanzio, Giulio Romano, Baldassarre Peruzzi himself, Giovanni Antonio Bazzi (known as The Sodoma). Outstanding examples are the Loggia di Psiche by Raffaello and his school; the Sala di Galatea by Raffaello and Sebastiano del Piombo; the Sala delle Prospettive by Baldassarre Peruzzi.

This church , according to the tradition, was founded by Pope Callisto I in the 3rd century and later enlarged between the 8th and 9th centuries.
The current layout was designed and achieved in the 12th century, also using buildings materials recovered by Caracalla baths.
The interiors feature an impressive mosaic apse, showing Holy Mary and Jesus Christ sitting on the same throne.
