Originally started in the 14th century, the finished work you see today is thanks to the 19th-century architect Giuseppe Mengoni, who also designed the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. Whether lined in winter with Christmas stalls full of wrapped-up shoppers or full of people watching an open-air concert in the summer sun, Piazza Duomo is always a place bustling with life.

Aside from the Theatre, the square is also surrounded by La Scala Museum, Milan’s city hall Palazzo Marino and the Palazzo della Banca Commerciale Italiana. A 19th-century statue of Leonardo Da Vinci marks the centre.
