Also called the Flavian Amphitheater, the Colosseum of Rome is the largest amphitheater in the Roman Empire. Completed in 80 AD, the Colosseum was able to accommodate between 50,000 and 75,000 spectators. For over 500 years, the Colosseum has hosted many fights in its arena. The Coliseum Games saw the famous gladiators clash in deadly battles. There was also fighting against wild animals, often lions, panthers, crocodiles, elephants, hippopotamuses or giraffes brought directly from Africa.
