The building was something extraordinary for the Romans, whose history merges with the story of the very foundation of Rome. It was in the esplanade between Aventino and Palatine that, according to tradition, the famous Ratto delle Sabine took place and it was in this place that, already from Romulus, numerous festivities linked to the agricultural cycle were held and organized. Its importance grew together with the city: it was the Tarquins who arranged some wooden seats for the spectators in the valley and it was Giulio Cesare who started the construction of the first Circus in masonry.
