Archaeologist for a Day

We will go to the Villa of the Colonnacce, an important archaeological site just at the gates of Rome, to discover how the professional archaeologist works. Here we will begin with a guided tour of the site where we will learn about the daily life of the Romans to then instruct ourselves on the techniques used for intervention, in order to be prepared for the excavating experience. The site is immersed within the beautiful landscape of a natural protected area, away from the noise and hassles of the city.

Professional archaeologists will take you to the site and teach you the basic skills needed to proceed with a real archaeological dig. Learn how to use the trowel and recognize layers; how to spot finds and give them an appropriate position within the chronological table. You will be able to identify ancient roman features and acknowledge the architecture of an ancient villa.

The experience is open to everybody. We have been hosting people from all over the world, passionate for archaeology and ancient history. Kids love digging, discover and getting dirty: a unique learning experience.

You will have lunch with us inside the archaeological area. We have a small kitchen we use for cooking food for our workers. You will join us at lunchtime, enjoying a truly Italian home-style set course including wine, coffee and extras according to daily availability.

The money earned from this experience will go to fund our archaeological projects. Your involvement in this project will help us to keep the site alive: restoration, research, purchase of new tools, cleaning.... all this will be possible thanks to you!
