Bauhaus and Co Private Tour to Modern World Heritage Sites in Berlin

Although the settlements of Berlin's Modern Age have been World Heritage Sites since 2008, they are unknown to most visitors to Berlin. You should not miss these important buildings! On the tour we will visit three of the six World Heritage sites. As a historian, book author and experienced guide, I can give you a unique insight: On our tour, you will not only learn about the architectural and aesthetic concepts of this architecture, I also report on the social and political backgrounds of the buildings. We cycle mostly through side streets and remarkable parks, and so you get to know Berlin away from the tourist hotspots. In addition to the excellently restored buildings of the World Heritage you will explore with me the rough side of the German capital in its old working-class neighborhoods.

Stop At: Berlin, Berlin

On our bike tour we visit three settlements of the Berliner Moderne, which since 2008 belong to the UNESCO World Heritage. In addition to the Siemens city with buildings by the Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius, we will see the settlement Schillerpark in Berlin-Wedding and the White City in Berlin-Reinickendorf. On the tour, we will also be driving past the only public housing developments designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Finally, we visit the people's park Rehberge and Jungfernheide, two of the largest and most interesting parks of the interwar period: It shows how important the interplay of architecture and greenery and recreation areas was for the urban planning of the Weimar Republic.

Stop At: Reinickendorf, Reinickendorf, Berlin

The white town in Reinickendorf distinguishes itself by its clear forms in the international style. Although the buildings are not strictly Bauhaus heritage, the Bauhaus principles are particularly clear: a simple yet elegant design, rational floor plans and a variety of utilities such as shops, a café, a doctor's office and a central laundry marked this complex ,

Stop At: Wedding, Wedding, Berlin

Our tour will take us through the settlement Schiller Park of Bruno Taut. This world heritage settlement is based on contemporary architecture in Holland. Right next door is a housing development in a conservative language of form - it is possible to trace how bitterly the architecture was contested in the Weimar Republic: architecture was always politically charged.

Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: Siemensstadt, Berlin, Germany

In the Siemensstadt, a complex has been preserved by the Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius and several buildings by Hans Scharoun, who also decisively shaped Berlin's architecture after 7.45 pm. In this settlement, especially the transition between the residential development and the adjoining park is particularly well managed.
