Kafka's Prague Walking Audio Tour by VoiceMap

Franz Kafka is one of the most influential writers in modern literature. Both his life and his work are tightly connected to the city of Prague. During this tour, we will visit the most important places in Kafka's Prague. You will see houses where he lived, the Jewish Quarter and the tiny alleys of the old town. These places have often inspired his writing and provided the subjects and settings of his texts.

We will start outside Cafe Kafka, in Franz Kafka Square. You can reach it from the Old Town Square by walking towards the river. On the train, disembark at Staroměstská metro station and walk about 200 metres away from the river.

The tour is ready whenever you are and the audio plays automatically at exactly the right time and place using your smartphone's GPS and the VoiceMap mobile app, which also works offline.

Pass By: The Old-New Synagogue, Maiselova 18, Prague 110 00 Czech Republic

It was built in the 1200s and is Europe's oldest active synagogue. It is called “Old New Synagogue” - presumably because there was once an even older synagogue here, which was torn down. Therefore, the once “new” synagogue became the “old new” synagogue.

According to a legend, the attic of this synagogue is home to the Golem, an inhuman creature made of clay and animated by a magic spell. If you look to the front wall of the facade, facing the street, you see the ladder made of iron bars reaching up to the attic.

Pass By: Prague Castle, Hradcany, Prague 11908 Czech Republic

The Prague Castle is a prime tourist destination, not least for its “Golden Lane”, where myths say alchemists searched for the recipe for gold. Nowadays there's an admission fee, but back in Kafka's days it was just another place to live.

Pass By: Zidovske Muzeum v Praze, U Stare skoly 141/1 Staré Město, Prague 110 00 Czech Republic

The Jewish Museum in Prague is a historical center of Jewish legacy in the Czech Republic and stands out amongst the most visited places in Prague. Its gathering of Judaica is one of the biggest on the planet with around 40,000 items, 100,000 books, and a bountiful chronicle of Czech and Moravian Jewish history.
