Botanical gardens house collections of eucalyptus, cactuses and succulents from all ends of the earth and some of the trees in the Olive Grove are more than 300 years old. Very popular are spectacular peacocks, the symbol of Lokrum, and adorable rabbits wandering around to keep you company.

The ancient erosional depression in the relief has been filled with sea during the youngest geological age, the Quarternary. Today “The Dead Sea” is the famous Lokrum beach.

The building of the fortress on the highest peak of Lokrum was initiated by the French army after the occupation of Dubrovnik in 1806 and completed during the Austrian administration around 1835.
