Stop At: Plitvicka Jezera, Plitvice Lakes National Park 53231 Croatia

If you’re being asked what the most beautiful Croatian lakes are, it is for certain that Plitvice lakes are your first thought. As Croatia’s biggest national park, with unique and spectacular nature, your choice is well taken.

Since their foundation as a national park in 1949, new recognition arrived when waterfalls, which were created by deposition of travertine, were recognized as worldwide nature heritage and were added to UNESCO World Heritage register in 1979. Process of deposition of travertine, which takes long periods of time, created 16 crystal clear lakes whose beauty is beyond words. But, those lakes are not stationary waters, they are connected with waterfalls and divided into Upper and Lower lakes. Even though Plitvice National park area consists of less than 1% percent of water, it is commonly called a “Park of water”. Although it took nature centuries to create it, you can explore it in a 3 to 4 hours trip. Besides the lakes and waterfalls, Plitvice lakes have many more to offer, such as natural heritage, exquisite flora and fauna, sunbathed meadows, woods and karstic rocks.
