Stop At: 100 Selva Tropical, Tikal National Park Guatemala

Easily the most famous Maya city in the world, Tikal has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. With soaring iconic temples that have appeared in hundreds of films, TV shows, and documentaries, Tikal is a sprawling site located deep in the jungle of El Peten Department in northern Guatemala.

The sprawling site measures over six square miles (16 square km) and has more than 3,000 surviving structures. To get the best experience, it’s definitely recommended that you explore Tikal with one of our experienced local guides. Few sights can compare the endless jungle panorama that you can glimpse from one of the pyramids built thousands of years ago.

Watching the sun set below the horizon in Tikal is a magical experience. As darkness settles, the jungle will come to life. First, spider and howler monkeys will make their presence known in the tree tops. If you’re lucky, you’ll also glimpse creatures like tarantulas, foxes, wild turkeys, ocelots, coatimundis (a cross between a raccoon and a monkey), and even toucans.

Besides being famous for its majestic beauty, Tikal is unique in that the main temples are spaced quite far away. Even with thousands of tourists visiting the site each year, it’s possible to be on the grounds and not see a single other human being. You’ll definitely feel a bit like Indiana Jones, discovering the long-lost ruins for the first time.
